Net in the Straits
« on: June 18, 2010, 06:42:57 AM »
Just read on another forum that there is a net set at Tal-y-Foel every night around dusk. Put out from a small boat across the sandbank to the shore.

Nets in The Straights

Regular evening launching from Gallows Point by three boats (rumour has it that they're from Bangor).
You can see the netting gear well hidden under the fish boxes and it's NOT seine netting.

Pity the bloody Fisheries people can't work when they're needed instead of this 9-5 crap they're doing now.

Once I fix this bleedin camera I'll post pics of the boats.

What's the legality of this ??  I'm pretty sure it had a huge impact on the bass fishing in the strait last year , and would hate it to do so again this year !

There was a piece in one of the fishing mags this month about the bass netting, basically saying that if you catch bass off the shore there's no point putting it back to fight another day as the chances are it'll just get scooped up anyway.
I know it's a romantic notion that you'll catch that very same fish 12 months on and a few pounds heavier, but in reality I think it ending up in the pot as a result of stealth, cunningness and guille on the part of the angler with atleast a chance for the fish to fight back is a more fitting end than just getting netted. :'( :'( :'(

Hi Guys,
The situation is that the straits from a line between Beaumaris and llanfairfechan to the other end  at a line between Belan and Abermenai Pt, fixed and drift netting is prohibited between 1st April and 30th Nov. Seine netting is however allowed.
