Wylfa Head - 22/1/12
« on: January 23, 2012, 08:58:16 AM »
Hi all,

Call from Carl on Saturday resulted in myself, Carl and Graham having an a Sunday afternoon session on the top end of the Island.

Carl has been working in Bodedern recently, and got talking to a fellow builder who is also a keen fisherman. He told him of our trip last week to Llanbadrig, our first time here and how much fun we'd had getting down on the rocks in front of the Church. He had mentioned the flatter rocks to the left being one of his favorite rock marks, so this seemed to be the spot for us.

Unfortunately, due to the blustery westerlies we've been having, plan A was out so I suggested the opposite side of the bay, the East side of Wylfa Head. I'd taken a walk around there a couple of years ago and thought it might provide some shelter.

As we parked up and headed out, we walked to the shore to survey the coastline. In more hope than expectation I pointed out the sandy cove to our left, even pointing out the little gillemot fishing in the bay, all to no avail. Graham is not happy unless he's wedging his arse cheeks into jaggedy, slippery rocks and as expected, he strode off purposefully passed the steps down to the beach and off towards the rocky marks!

We dutifully followed and eventually found a surprisingly comfortable ledge, nicely sheltered from the wind, and started setting up.

By the time we were in, we had a couple of hours to low. I started with mackerel fillets whilst Carl and Graham went off with sandeel. I started picking up reasonable sized whiting from the off, the other two took a little longer to get started, the sandeel proving popular with the resident dogfish. Just after the turn, their persistence with the eel paid off, with each of them landing a decent sized codling, Carl's being a slightly larger, silver green fish at around 3lb, Grahams more mottled reddy brown of about 21/2lb.

Seeing their success, I switched bait, but with both eel and squid, I just found the doggies they were throwing back!

We packed up a little after 6.30pm, a new mark successfully ventured and stored for future reference. Incidentally, does anyone know how the sandy cove fishes or have any other info about how this area performs through the year?

All luck - Bhuna.

Nice fishing there guys  8).

I've always fancied giving Wylfa headland a go but I haven't quite got around to it yet, maybe this year  ;).

Keep up the good work.

well done with the cod lads, ive fished the rocks near the mouth of the little cove but only had little pout from it, but like you i only fished it as a bad weather escape venue so dont really know what it could produce in decent conditions. Its fairly shallow and it faces away from the prevailing so it wont get much swell so unlikley to be brilliant fishing. (unless someone knows better)  Andy

Fished the cove afew times, good for hiding from the winds and the shed provides abit of shelter too. . 1st time we fished i had 2 strap conger to 2kg ,only ones ever caught aswell of shore. And also had some nice coalie too. 2 n half poundes . Pout n dogfish, baby codling and baby huss, snaggy to left and rite ok down middle. Not bad for an steady sesh. Cheers for the info Tojo, Good to have a mark that can give shelter from strong westerlies, and a decent selection of fish to boot!!

That sounds like a useful mark to know. I havn't fished that paticular cove but have fished near by at the red spot marked above. Me and couple of mates camped to left of cemaes bay a couple of years a go and fished there. It was mid may, we had some good sized cod there and my first octopus. There is a good flow across in front of you when the tide picks up, I think the fish follow it across as tide goes in and out.  The ground is pretty clean. Easiest path is from car park near Wylfa.

We night fished the little cove to the left of the place marked and had a great run of dogfish. It was pretty much nonstop for nearly an hour. As soon as you'd unhooked one you had another on the other rod. My mate lost his wallet as he decided to strip off and go skinny dipping. He didn't notice till back at the tent. We went back to find it but the tide had come in and he'd lost his money for the trip and driving license Doh!
Fishing was great round there though  :)
